Dr. Elena Galinova is the academic director of the Language Institute at Penn State.  She provides academic, administrative, and organizational leadership for the Summer Language Institute and overall support for the less commonly taught languages at Penn State. She is a former academic adviser and an experienced educator eager to help students discover their unique educational paths and integrate language education into their broader plans for building global competence. She recently published a book on issues related to advising Chinese students and a book chapter on promoting global citizenship as a holistic experience in college.

As a Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) program administrator, Elena is responsible for organizing FLAS information sessions, advising prospective applicants, coordinating the work of the selection committee, and working with the FLAS fellows on completing the program requirements (i.e., selecting appropriate courses, doing pre- and post-program language evaluation, and accounting for their academic progress). Students interested in the FLAS scholarship program and generally in incorporating intercultural issues and language studies in their education can always make an appointment with Elena to discuss their academic plans and goals.
