Isabel is a PhD student in Hispanic Linguistics and Language Science in the Department of Spanish, Italian & Portuguese. Her research targets marginalized multilingual speech communities, such as the ones in Ecuador and Colombia, where a Spanish-based mixed language, Media Lengua, and Creole Palenquero are spoken together with Spanish or Quichua. Combining psycholinguistic methods with traditional field research, Isabel studies how multilinguals in these understudied language contact areas process language and navigate usage of multiple languages. In particular, her research intends to reveal how bilingual speech patterns can speak to more general cognitive processes for producing and understanding language.
